Eulogy

Dad grew up as a straight forward old protestant. He attended Crystal Springs Church of God in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Dad was a thinker. They say that Catholicism is the thinking man’s Christianity. So, I was not surprised when he converted to Catholicism.

We were not raised Catholic. So, I studied it. Just a little bit. One thing that struck me is that the rituals in the mass come from the roots of Judaism.

When your dad dies, it’s a sad day. Especially when you only really got to know him late in life. The Bible instructs us to honor your mother and father. But, it doesn’t say how, and it never said whether they deserve it or not.
I honored him by giving him my time. I don’t regret our weekly visits. I learned everything about him from his childhood, to his restlessness that made him always seek what was behind the curtain, and, at the end, to whether he feared his impending death. I don’t regret even one second of my time.
